Why does the new The Shins album sound like it could be the new The Cure album?

I'm not complaining, I'm just confused. It sounds pretty good, I have to say.

Nominees for my favorite albums of 2006:

-Robyn Hitchcock, Ole! Tarantula
-TV on the Radio, Return to Cookie Mountain
-Belle & Sebastian, The Life Pursuit
-Kreg Viesselman, The Pull

I almost said Takk... by Sigur Ros, but I double-checked and it was September of '05. Duh.

If pressed, I would call We the Vehicles my favorite, with The Pull a close second. I haven't yet worked my way totally through The Onion's Best of '06 List, which is usually how I learn about the great stuff I have missed during the year, so it's likely I will find some other favorites. I have not yet been able to listen to Midlake's '06 album, and somehow, I have not listened to the new one by Lambchop, either. That's on my list of stuff to do...
